Cultures Confined: Impact of Incarceration

Cultures Confined: Impacts of Incarceration is a student-driven exhibit that shows the effects of the prison industrial complex and how it targets different marginalized communities in the United States. This social justice exhibit brings awareness to programs on the California State University San Marcos campus that support formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students. It is a collaborative effort on behalf of Transitions Collective, Project Rebound, Black Student Center, Black Student Union, Black Sistahood, National Latino Research Center, and Homie UP. The exhibit showcases a variety of pieces, including Chicanx art from students currently incarcerated and taking classes through the Homie UP program, portraits, and representations of mothers, children, and LGBT+ populations.
It is the hope of exhibitors to give people a platform to share their experiences and speak out against discrimination in the Prison-Industrial Complex. Cultures Confined: Impacts of Incarceration is led by the CSUSM Transitions Collective and Project Rebound in partnership with the Black Student Center, Black Student Union, National Latino Research Center, and Homie UP.
Please join us for a gallery reception and panel discussion Prison Industrial Complex: It Affects Us ALL! on Thursday, February 28, 2019 on the 3rd floor in the University Library Gallery from 6pm-8pm. This event is free and open to the public (visitors may purchase parking permits). Prior to the gallery reception and panel discussion, various student groups from the CSUSM campus will host a tabling event outside in Kellogg Plaza. This event will feature educational material and literature on the prison industrial complex and its effect on underrepresented minority populations.
